Rest & Reset - The Key to Calm

Accepting things the way they are: the key to calm.

This week’s theme focused on how we can bring more acceptance into our lives, here are some ideas to help keep our calm in amongst the busy this month.

Mindfulness involves accepting what’s happened and what’s happening right now. It involves feeling whatever you feel without trying to resist, or control those feelings or whatever is happening.

In our lives, this doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to something, to give in. It means understanding that at this moment, something is what it is.

Of course life will bring problems and challenges we’d rather not have to face, often leaving us wishing those things had never happened.

However, by bringing acceptance to a situation or feeling, it allows us to recognize we cant change what has already happened, but we do have a choice, right now, as to how we can respond in the present moment.

Once we accept something the way things are, rather than react to it (which can be impulsive), we can move into a space of responding in a more thoughtful, and favorable way.

We can then, if needs be, focus our energy on constructively solving the problem rather than using our thoughts and energy on being frustrated and upset.

The same principle applies during our meditation practice. The more we can begin to accept that the mind will wander, thoughts and feelings will arise but also go, and to know this is an expected, natural and successful sign of meditation, the easier you will find it to settle out of the internal battle within, into a state of calm.
